We were contacted by the owner of a meticulously maintained apartment in Torquay who was understandably frustrated to find cockroaches appearing inside their home. The apartment itself was spotless, well maintained, and cleaned regularly. However, it was located directly above a restaurant — which significantly increases the likelihood of cockroach pressure.
Apartments situated above or adjacent to food premises often experience cockroach movement through shared wall cavities, plumbing penetrations, and service ducts. Even if one tenancy maintains high hygiene standards, cockroaches can migrate from neighbouring areas in search of food, moisture, and warmth.
During our inspection, we identified likely entry points within wall cavities and service areas. Because cockroaches are highly resilient and often avoid traditional surface sprays, we implemented a non-repellent cockroach treatment. Non-repellent products allow cockroaches to move through treated areas without detecting the product, transferring it back to harbourage sites and spreading it within the colony.
Monitoring points were also established to assess ongoing activity.
This type of infestation is not uncommon in coastal hospitality hubs like Torquay. The key is early intervention and using the correct treatment method. Since treatment, activity has reduced significantly, and ongoing monitoring will ensure the issue remains controlled.
